November Retreat Books
It’s nearly time to pack your books, get cosy and join us for our weekend in Malton! We’ve lined up a lovely mix of local adventures and blissful downtime, with plenty of chances to settle into a good read and chat all things books. Once we settle in for our daytime adventures, we will dive into discussion and conversation around these books:
Our first author evening at the Yorkshire Retreat welcomes Sara Sheridan and her latest novel, The Jewel Keepers. We’ll journey into 18th-century Scotland before sitting down to a three-course dinner in the Fitzwilliam Room at the Talbot, a beautiful private dining space. With mystery, romance and a literal treasure hunt, this book was such an enjoyable read. I’m looking forward to hearing what you make of its adventures through Edinburgh—and discussing them with Sara herself.

On Saturday evening, we’ll be joined by publishing powerhouse Alison Barrow to discuss her debut novel, When Everything Was Burning. Ahead of its release next June, we’ll have the chance to explore this tender, suspenseful story and its portrait of community in the North. I’ve loved its lyrical writing, and I’m particularly keen to hear about Alison’s move from championing other writers to becoming a novelist herself.

For Sunday’s conversation, there’s a little homework: please read Deesha Philyaw’s new novel, The True Confessions of First Lady Freeman, before we meet for brunch. I’ve just started it, and there’s already plenty of humour, drama and joy to discuss. It’s a quick, lively read, so you may even find time to finish it during the retreat. Then we’ll gather over mimosas to compare favourite characters, exchange opinions and get into all the details. Heels and your favourite lipstick are very welcome to match our characters’ energy - if the mood takes you!
*Deesha will not be joining for this discussion
